Types of Avocados

1. There are traditional varieties.
Every place has varieties of apricots that are native to the respective area, these apricots are very long, with a low yield.

2. There are modern varieties (Chotara)
There are many types of hybrid apricots, and here are below are some of the most popular ones here in Tanzania

i. Hass
  • This is a very popular type of avocado
  • It is a fruit that has a lot of berries
  • It is pointed up and down
  • It is easily stored
ii. The second type is Fuerte
  • This is a type of avocado with a very soft skin, its skin is slippery as if coated with oil
  • it has a lot of oil but it sometimes rots
  • It is good for regular use, not for transporting long distances
  • If this type is cultivated in high and very cold places, it is very useful to produce a lot of oil that can be used to make lotions and some animal foods

  • This tree takes a very long time to grow
  • Its fruit is usually large, and very expensive
Avocado Planting

The space between the hole and the hole
  • The distance from hole to hole is 7 METERS
  • The distance from line to line is 7 METERS
But the measure above will depend a lot on the type of soil of your farm, for soil with a lot of Phosphorus (P), that measure is not suitable, because after 3-5 years the seedlings of two consecutive lines will be together in the middle
  • So there may be a chance
8M X 8M-FOR THIS SPACE YOU WILL HAVE 63 PLANTS PER 1 ACRE
OR
9M X 9M-FOR THIS SPACE YOU WILL HAVE 49 PLANTS PER 1 ACRE
OR
10M X 10M- FOR THIS SPACE YOU WILL HAVE 40 PLANTS PER 1

ACRE Pit size
  • The hole would be 2.5 feet x 2.5 feet x 2.5 feet = (75 cm x 75 cm x 75 cm) (Height x width x length)
  • Or measure 3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet = 90 cm x 90 cm x 90 cm
Fertilizer
  • Planting fertilizers that will be needed, is one of these
  • Manure, Compost, DAP, or TSP-But it is important to plant natural fertilizers such as manure and mix a little with TSP or DAP
Fertilizer dosage,
  • If it is natural fertilizers (Manure or Compost) - An amount of 16 to 20 kg should be placed in the hole 3 months before planting
  • If you are going to plant industrial fertilizers (TSP, DAP, Minjingu, NPK etc) 100 to 200 grams should be placed in each hole, mixed well with the soil, then the plant should be placed and watered
MATURATION AND YIELDING
  • Especially these modern avocados, they start bearing after 3 years and their fruits ripen after 6 to 12 months. The fruit of the HASS type is the one that takes the longest to ripen, it takes between 7 and 12 years since it was formed in the tree.
HARVEST
  • For the first time one avocado tree can give you between 50 to 100 fruits per seedling.
  • Yield increases with age
  • When an apricot tree reaches the age of 4 to 5 years, it becomes full maturity, and thus one tree can give you up to 1200 fruits for the whole year.
ADVANTAGES
with a measurement of 10 meters x 10 meters, in one acre you will have 40 meters
  • Each tree after 5 years can give you an average of 1000 fruits
  • So for 40 trees, you will have a total of 40 fruits x 1000 = 40,000
  • Sell each fruit at the farm price for 250 tsh, and you have 40,000 fruits
  • So you will get a total of 250 tsh x 40,000 fruits = 10,000,000 tsh (10 MILLION)
